How It Started

In 2012 I was in Rwanda to work on the Rwanda Micronutrient Project, which was aimed at reducing malnutrition in infants between 6-23 months of age with a particular focus on stunting and iron-deficiency anemia. As a field editor, I worked alongside a group of Rwandan university students including Eric Platini. Eric attended DIZA school as a child after the 1994 genocide, and says that it gave so much to him that he now volunteers as the DIZA Coordinator. After I completed my work on the nutrition project, I travelled to Rwamagana to see DIZA school.

I personally believe that music can be a tool for empowerment, building confidence and social skills; motivation for a student to attend school; a way to bring people together. Most importantly, it can make life a little more beautiful.

I decided that I would establish a music program for the children of DIZA. I travelled around Rwanda and priced out instruments to formulate a budget. I figured out the logistics of the program and derived a plan for when I could raise enough money to fund the program. Eric interviewed local music teachers and found four who were a good fit for DIZA. The program begun in February 2014.

Over the last few years, I have held two fundraising events, and I have had a huge amount of support from friends and family. I feel so fortunate to be surrounded by so many generous and caring people.
